Sky Italia is one of the leading players in the Italian entertainment and telecommunications landscape. In addition to being the top pay-TV platform in Italy, the company has expanded its offerings to include fixed and mobile network services. Always at the forefront, Sky continually invests in technological innovation to optimize its technological infrastructure.

The problem

In carrying out its activities, Sky Italia is increasingly confronted with the management of a growing volume of long-term monitoring and operational data. This requires a more precise and timely understanding of its operational infrastructure and a proactive approach to managing complex events to optimize asset utilization, energy consumption, and prevent performance degradation or failures.

This challenge is compounded by the dynamic and complex nature of modern IT environments, which undergo frequent updates and modifications, partly due to extensive hardware virtualization and the variety of software systems adopted. The problem is even more complex for a multi-business company like Sky Italia, which must constantly update its operational topology to keep pace with changes. This makes it essential to recognize and analyze complex events unfolding within the infrastructure. Traditional methods that rely heavily on manual data analysis and management are becoming inadequate. While some available solutions offer sufficient support, they often fall short of fully meeting real needs due to their generic nature.

The solution

The EXPLAIN project is part of Sky Italia’s AIOps initiative. AIOps, or Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations, combines large-scale monitoring data and machine learning to automate IT operational processes, including event correlation, anomaly detection, and causality determination.

EXPLAIN aims to achieve several goals: innovating the management of monitoring data generated directly from the field or from dedicated systems with a format that integrates granular data and synthetic models; automating the discovery and updating of IT topology with AI and LLM, using advanced correlation models to detect anomalies, predict incidents or performance deteriorations, and interpret operational patterns; adopting a proactive and adaptive IT management aligned with Industry 4.0 for efficiency, fault prevention, and energy savings; enhancing competitiveness by improving resource management, decision-making, and strategic planning through a holistic view of IT infrastructure; and guiding future investments and the evolutionary trajectory of IT infrastructure based on experimental results.

Desired Impacts

The EXPLAIN project aims to improve the management of Sky Italia’s IT infrastructure through advanced automation, reducing the need for manual interventions and enhancing the accuracy of data and IT topology management. This will allow for greater proactivity in anomaly detection and management, reducing downtime and optimizing energy savings.

Benefits for the company

The implementation of the project will lead to a significant improvement in operational efficiency and a reduction in the costs of data and IT infrastructure management. Furthermore, the adoption of advanced AI solutions will better prepare Sky Italia for future challenges, optimizing resource utilization and ensuring better strategic planning, with a positive impact on the company’s energy sustainability.
