East Trenchers offers specialized services to companies operating in the field of infrastructure. In particular, East Trenchers carries out technical services for engineering and environment and it is specialized in non-destructive (ND) geophysical survey on infrastructures, with particular experience in GPR surveys. Furthermore, the rental and post-rental service of Tesmec Trencher and Rock Hawg provided by East Trenchers is aimed at companies involved in road and hydraulic constructions, railway tunnels, water pipelines, oil and gas pipelines, public sewers, bulk excavation, site preparation and everything related to excavation work.

The problem

To date, the localization and classification activities of utilities and buried objects supporting excavation operations are largely conducted by a human operator, who relies on images and data provided by software following a Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) scan of the area to be excavated. The duration and accuracy of the operation depend heavily on the operator’s experience. In order to reduce this dependence and optimize the process, there is a need to develop an AI-based software system capable of automating much of the process, thereby making the operator’s work more efficient, involving them only in value-added activities.
